In the past week a controversial ruling has been put forward within the municipality of Arona, and, it looks like being passed in the coming days despite last minute hitches in regards to the prohibition of smoking and drinking on the beaches of the municipality.
Environment representative Antonio Sosa, said that “the purpose of this ruling is to regulate activities in public spaces, both sporting, recreational and leisure and enable the public to enjoy the beaches and coastline in general."
With regard to the prohibition of smoking and drinking, that "it is a call to the public on the impact of cigarette butts on beaches and its harmful effect. However, we do have information campaigns to prevent this and provide friendly beaches, with divide cones to deposit butts, more litter bins, etc ".
We are working on improving services on the beaches of the municipality, with the installation of showers, wooden walkways, furniture, on an ongoing basis. What we do have to make clear is that there must be a legal framework that regulates the activities."
Entrepreneurs and hoteliers have already shown their opposition to the ruling and the City Council have warned that the most important thing is to keep the beaches with appropriate services as well as cleaning them.

AIR EUROPA are shortly to open an important weekly service between Tenerife and Miami. Some 300,000 Floridians are of Canary Islands descent, and the Tenerife Tourist Board are hoping that many of them will want to trace their roots. The 299-seater airbus will leave Miami, arriving in Tenerife the next day at 7.35am. The return flight will depart Tenerife at 1.50pm, arriving back in Miami at 4:50am the following day. “Until now, it was difficult for Americans to get to the Canary Islands,” said Javier Piñanes, director of Spain’s Tourist Office in New York. “This new service will open up a new, warm-weather destination for Americans, particularly those from the south-eastern US.” The Spanish-owned airline are planning one Saturday flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Tenerife’s North Airport, from 20th June – and tourism officials are thrilled. |
