Lanzarote is a varied island of dramatic volcanic scenery, pristine white villages and beautiful, broad beaches. Lava plays a big role in the island’s attractions, which include the volcano-fuelled barbecue in Timanfaya national park. The island differs from the others largely due to Ceasar Manrique’s environmental efforts, chronicled at the Fundacion Ceasar Manrique at Jameos del Agua there are underground grottoes illuminated and furnished by him. Lanzarote’s resorts are contained and few in number, but amenities are still abundant. Hidden coves like those around Papagayo are a magnet for holidaymakers.
